The First Mile is the Hardest One.

If you ask any runner, they will most likely tell you the first mile is the hardest. Starting your run is the hardest part (as I was struggling to get to the half mile mark today). Getting into your rhythm, finding your pace, and simply taking those first steps can often be the most difficult part of the workout. The same is true for life.
In life, taking the first step can be scary. Starting something new, waking up to a new day, going to a new school, starting a new job, a new workout class, living in a new city, meeting new friends, trying new food. Literally any new aspect of your life could be scary and you may be hesitant. But the first mile is the hardest. The start is always the hardest part. Even for experienced runners and highly active individuals, the first mile is still the toughest one. Even for ambitious and seemingly fearless individuals, changes and leaving one’s comfort zone can still be scary. Once you get going, once you find your rhythm, you’ll be set.
The first mile is so tough because you are taking your body from a restful and comfortable state to one where your body is demanding more energy and your lungs are seeking more oxygen. In addition to your body going through the physical shift, your mindset is also required to adjust from a dormant state to an active and disciplined one. It can be difficult to find your stride, but once you get to mile 2, 3, 5, etc, you will be on autopilot and able to keep your rhythm.
The same is true in the real world. The start can be incredibly difficult. The beginning is always the hardest part. Once you take that first step and commit to starting your new journey, you will eventually find your rhythm and feel more comfortable and confident. You need to get through the uncomfortable and exhausting experience of getting started. Once you find your pace and get started, you will be unstoppable.
You have to get through the first mile in order to run the marathon. You have to get through the beginning stages in order to reach your goals in life. The first mile is always the hardest one, but don’t let that stop you from taking the first step. Once you take the first step, the second will be easier, and soon you’ll reach the finish line.
Xoxo,
Kaci
