Butterflies Fly in Formation.

People always ask me how I never get nervous. On the outside, my confidence usually radiates and my anxiety is concealed. Although I would consider myself a confident person, sometimes I truly rely on the old phrase: “fake it til you make it.” When you see me on the pageant stage, modeling, public speaking, in the gym, and out in social situations, it’s easy to see my confidence. However, it is not due to a lack of butterflies in my stomach, but rather the fact I have learned how to channel my nerves and use them to my advantage. I’ve learned how to teach my butterflies how to fly in formation.
Three years ago I was sitting at a leadership conference and vividly remember hearing Julie Foudy, a two time FIFA World Champion and two time Olympic Gold Medalist, say: “Butterflies are great; just teach them to fly in formation.” This message instantly struck me and is a phrase I often use to calm my nerves. Confidence does not mean you do not get nervous or have anxiety. Confidence is feeling those fears, insecurities, and hesitations, and choosing to redirect those negative feelings into positive ones. It’s learning how to channel butterflies into confidence.
Nerves are actually a good thing. A really good thing. It means you care about whatever you’re nervous about. Instead of allowing your nerves to control you, you must learn how to take those butterflies in your stomach and align them to give you positive energy instead. Teach your butterflies how to fly in formation. If you can do this, you are set up for success.
